Research & Teaching Hub in Environmental Fluid Mechanics

The Environmental Fluid Mechanics (EFM) Lab supports cutting-edge research and high-quality teaching in environmental fluid mechanics within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, at the University of Cyprus, in Nicosia.

The laboratory serves as an interdisciplinary hub, integrating experimental, computational, and field-based approaches to better understand and address challenges related to urban climate, air quality, and environmental flows

Laboratory Infrastructure and Technical Equipment:

  • Air quality monitoring stations (portable and fixed) measuring PM, NO₂, CO, O₃, and more
  • Wireless sensor networks and IoT platforms for environmental monitoring
  • High-performance computing infrastructure for CFD simulations and atmospheric modelling (WRF)
  • Water channel for hydrodynamics experiments
  • Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system for high-resolution flow visualization and velocity field measurements
  • Educational-scale wind tunnel for experimental studies
  • GIS and Visualization Systems for mapping and data analysis
  • Educational fluid mechanics equipment, including:
    • •Experimental setups for Bernoulli, Reynolds, and jet impact phenomena
    • •Wind tunnel with smoke systems and multi-tube manometers
