Project Overview

SustUrbanClim was a large-scale interdisciplinary research initiative aiming to advance scientific understanding of urban microclimate, urban heat island dynamics, air quality, and sustainable built environment design under current and future climate conditions. The project combined field campaigns, laboratory experiments, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), mesoscale atmospheric modelling, theoretical multiscale analysis, and policy-

oriented cost-benefit assessments to investigate how urban form, materials, vegetation, and climate change influence environmental quality and human health in Mediterranean cities. Using Nicosia as a key living laboratory, SustUrbanClim developed and validated innovative methodologies for coupling urban-scale and regional climate models, generated evidence-based adaptation and mitigation strategies, and supported climate-resilient urban planning. The project’s outputs included validated modelling frameworks, urban intervention strategies, policy recommendations, and scientific advancements in urban physics, environmental engineering, and climate resilience, positioning UCY’s EFM-Lab as a regional centre of excellence in sustainable urban climate research.
