Course Department

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

To study and comprehend:
1. The natural phenomena and processes associated with the generation and the transformations of waves and current in the coastal zone.
2. The interaction between waves and currents with coastal structures, and the dynamics of the coastal environment.
3. The purpose, the performance, the design and the environmental impact of the most frequently used coastal structures.
Upon completion of the module the students will be able to: 1. describe the hydrodynamic processes and mechanisms of the coastal zone,
2. describe and implement analytical methods for the calculation of critical wave parameters, like for example, the wave height and period,
3. describe the interaction between waves and currents with coastal structures and calculate the hydrodynamic loads imparted on these structures,
4, describe the role, the performance and the main construction stages of the most commonly build coastal structures,
5. calculate the dimensions and design the cross-sectional layout of coastal structures like rubble mound and caisson breakwaters,
6. outline the dynamics of the coastal zone and the impacts of hard, manmade, interventions to the coastal environment.
The introduces and discusses: 1. the generation, the properties and the transformations of waves and currents in the coastal zone,
2. the parameters describing and the mechanisms associated with the hydrodynamic loads on coastal structures,
3. established methodologies for calculating the dimensions and for designing the cross section of the main types of coastal structures. Example of the construction process are also provided and discussed.
4. Finally, and introduction is made to coastal zone dynamics as well as to the most fundamental impacts of anthropogenic, hard interventions to the coastal environment.
