The CEE 587 – Coastal Zone Engineering and Management module focuses on the study and understanding of (1) the physical phenomena and the mechanisms dictating the morphodynamical evolution of the coastal zone, (2) the engineering methodologies and works for protecting and managing the coastline, and (3) the impact of a deteriorating coastal zone to the natural and anthropogenic environment and system. In particular, the module introduces the students to the theory and application of waves and nearshore hydrodynamics and morphodynamics, to the design principles and approaches for ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ coast protection schemes, and to the basic strategies and requirements for an integrated coastal zone management.
Successful completion of the module will enable students to: 1. Describe the processes leading to and the mechanisms associated with shoreline erosion and accretion.
2. Differentiate between soft and hard engineering options for defending the coastal zone, use analytical approaches to study, design and propose suitable mitigating solutions.
3. Describe and predict the environmental impact of shore protection works and of the wider coastal infrastructure.
4. Describe and implement analytical methods for calculating the morphodynamic evolution of the shoreline. 5. Assess and appreciate the success and the impact of coastal zone management / protection schemes implemented in different areas of the world. 6. Evaluate the impact of the climate conditions and of anthropogenic actions to the natural and societal coastal environment.
The module introduces and discusses: 1. The origins and the dynamics of waves in the coastal zone.
2. Sediment transport and morphodynamics.
3. The engineering methodologies and interventions for the protection of the shoreline.
4. Contemporary approaches and real-life examples of sustainable coastal zone management.
