Project Overview

TOPEUM investigated how urban morphology, building density, land cover, and construction materials influence urban heat island intensity, local climate, air quality, and energy demand in Mediterranean cities, using Nicosia as a representative case study. The project combined field measurements, boundary layer wind tunnel experiments, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), urban climate analysis, and cost-benefit assessment to evaluate sustainable urban planning strategies.

Through integrated environmental modelling and experimental validation, TOPEUM generated evidence-based recommendations for reducing urban overheating, minimizing cooling energy demand, improving outdoor thermal comfort, and enhancing climate resilience.

The project’s innovative interdisciplinary framework linked urban design, atmospheric science, environmental engineering, and policy development, producing practical guidance for planners and authorities. Expected outcomes included optimized urban planning parameters, validated simulation tools, best-practice mitigation strategies, and policy-relevant recommendations for sustainable development in Mediterranean climates.
